To create comprehensive reference maps of all human cells—the fundamental units of life—as a basis for both understanding human health and diagnosing, monitoring, and treating disease.
The HCA is a grass-roots led, global and open scientific project that has received support from multiple funders from around the world. Such a large, global initiative needs diverse, collaborative funding, and the HCA community is grateful to all the funders for their generosity and support.
Funders include, but are not limited to: The British Heart Foundation, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, DZHK, the Erling-Persson Family Foundation, the European Commission, the Helmsley Charitable Trust, INSERM, the Kavli Foundation, the Klarman Family Foundation, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the Medical Research Council of the UK, Schmidt Futures, US National Institutes of Health, Wellcome and many others. Many additional funders also support projects that will ultimately contribute to the HCA.
One of the things that helps support funding for HCA goals is the Funders Collective. This is a collaborative group, comprising individual representatives from funding organisations around the world with a shared interest in the goals of HCA.
We welcome enquiries from other organisations who would be interested in helping to support HCA and whose mission and values align with our work. Please contact funderscollective@humancellatlas.org.
The goal of the Funders Collective (FC) is to promote interaction, coordination and collaboration among funding organizations that share an interest in the goals of the HCA. FC members will seek to accelerate progress towards reaching these goals and avoid duplication of effort. The FC will not establish or direct the scientific goals of the HCA but rather engage in a forum to communicate and coordinate efforts that enable the scientist-led movement. The purpose of the Funders Collective meetings is to identify how these goals can be met through the sharing of information about funding opportunities, the development of joint activities, and through providing advice and feedback to the HCA OC. Participants in the Funder Collective will be asked and expected to maintain confidentiality of all information received in closed meetings.
The function of the Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) is to ensure communication and coordination between the scientific leadership, operational management, and representative funders. The JCC will evaluate and report back to the Funders Committee and HCA OC on the overall scope and executional success of the HCA operations in achieving the HCA’s mission. The JCC is co-chaired by the OC co-chairs and a representative appointed by the Funders Collective.
